Stornoway Hotel, Bed and Breakfast & Self Catering Accommodation

Stornoway on the Isle of Lewis, Outer Hebrides/Western IslesStornoway, on the Isle of Lewis, is the main town and administrative centre for the Outer Hebrides/Western Isles of Scotland. At times the town has played a prominent role in the history of Scotland and even when the islands were part of the Norse and Manx empires, Stornoway and the Hebrides often featured strongly in the lives of the Scottish kings who were, sometimes, depserate to incorporate the area into the lands of Scotland.

At one time Stornoway was a major component of the Scottish herring fishing industry and many old photographs show the mains streets piled high with barrels of herring packed by an army of women who travelled with the fishing fleet around Scotland during the herring season.

Today Stornoway is not as busy as it once was but you will be surprised at how busy it still manages to get, especially during the lunch hour when the town is flooded with students from the Nicholson Institute. Weekends are a lively experience, so lively that there have been reports in many mainstream 'lads' magazines with some describing Stornoway as the best place in the United Kingdom to party.

The town of Stornoway makes an excellent base for a vacation in the Outer Hebrides/Western Isles of Scotland. It has all the advantages of a modern UK town while being within easy driving distance of all of the wonderous tourist attractions. Of special note are the many beaches on the west side of Lewis which are well worth the trip, if you want to travel further the beaches on South Harris are just as good, if not better, than those on the westside but less likely to have many people on them. Also worth a mention are the Callanish Standing Stones and the Carloway Broch with both places being a 'must visit' tourist attraction.
