North Uist Accommodation
The Isle of North Uist is one of the islands in the group known as the Outer Hebrides (or Western Isles), which are situated far off the western coast of Scotland. Many consider the island to be a mix between the Isle of Harris (found to the North) and South Uist (ound to the south). Like Harris. North Uist has plenty of hills, lochs and lochans but the hills are not quite as harsh and more similar to the rolling hills of south. Also like Harris, North Uist is mainly Protestant as against the mainly Catholic South Uist, resulting in a mix of the two cultures which is fascinating.
Dotted across the Hebrides you will find single standing stones, stone circles and other important historic sites and on North Uist Pobull Fhìnn stands out as the islands finest. Many aspects of Scots Gaelic legends and Irish Gaelic mythology cross paths and it is thought that the stone circle is named after the legendary hero Finn (or Fingal) or, more suitably, to give him his Gaelic name, Fionn mac Cumhaill. Other standing stone include the three known as Na Fir Bhreige (in English, "the false men").
The largest settlement on North Uist is the village of Lochmaddy where you will be able to catch the ferry to and from the village of Uig over on the Isle of Skye.
